"Hey, what are you kids doing here? Can't you read the sign?" A big man in a yellow hard hat and coveralls was coming down the path through the trees towards them. Nicky looked at where he was pointing and saw a sign that read: "Danger Heavy Machinery Keep Out".

"Sorry, mister - we didn't see the sign," Francie said, grabbing Nicky's arm and pulling him away back along the beach with her.

"But we didn't get a chance to go up into the trees and see if there really is anything being buried up there. For all we know, the mess in the stream is just due to something natural that happens every Spring," Nicky protested.

"And do you think that man was just going to let us go wandering around up there? I don't think so!" Francie said.

"Well, what are we going to do?"

"I don't know"

They walked along the beach, dragging their feet in the sand. "We have to get up there to see what's happening," Francie said, " if there is something being dumped up there and it's making people sick, then we've got to do something about it."
